Insight on your Balance Sheet
Let’s talk about your Balance Sheet! It is also known as the Statement of Financial Position if you are a non-profit entity. It provides a detailed report of what your business owns, what your business owes, and the net worth of the company at a specific point in time.
The Balance Sheet is separated into three main sections:
Assets - the resources available to the business to support its operations (i.e. bank accounts, accounts receivable, inventory, and equipment).
Liabilities - the business’s obligations to other entities (i.e. credit cards, loans, and accounts payable)
Equity - the investment made in the business by its owners, as well as the cumulative profit or loss generated by the business.
Your Balance Sheet must always balance to offer a clear and accurate view of a business’s financial health. This helps investors determine if there are any risks in the business and make informed decisions.
Let’s walk through an example together:
Imagine you just started a small business—let’s say a cozy coffee shop.
To get things going, you invested $25,000 of your own money. That’s your equity—your personal stake in the business. You also took out a $20,000 loan and purchased some supplies on credit, leaving you with $5,000 in accounts payable. Now you’ve got some liabilities—money you owe to others. With that $50,000 total funding, you built your business:
You kept $10,000 in cash for day-to-day expenses
Bought $15,000 in inventory to sell
Invested $25,000 in equipment to operate
Now your business has $50,000 in assets.
Even though your business has $50,000 worth of “stuff,” none of it appeared out of nowhere:
$25,000 came from you (equity)
$25,000 came from others (liabilities)
That’s why your balance sheet balances: because every dollar of resources available to use has a source, whether it’s borrowed or invested.
